Liko helps children at the Cheviot View Centre

The world famous Likorall overhead tracking system from Liko is making a tremendous difference at the Cheviot View Centre in Newbiggin Hall, Newcastle.

The purpose built "home from home" opened in March 2008 and offers short breaks of two to four nights for up to five children that are aged between six and 18 and who are affected by cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy, autism, sensory impairments and other complex learning disabilities.

Its state of the art facilities - including sensory room, play room, computer room and gardens - guarantee the stay will be full of fun for those who visit, as well as offering the chance of a short break from caring responsibilities for their parents and carers. Liko was consulted throughout the centre’s construction to ensure the overhead systems were installed in positions which would result in maximum usage and benefit.

"The Liko system is very easy to use and the children love it, they always feel totally comfortable when being lifted which is brilliant," comments Ian Pastor, a care worker who has been with the centre for two years. "The kids have confidence with you straight away which helps us to develop a strong sense of trust. People from other respite care centres often see the Liko systems and say they wish they had facilities like ours!"

The centre has already been a great success with the children who visit and various societies. It has been awarded both Investing in Children and Autism Accreditation status, and a recent Ofsted report found the centre to be excellent in all areas. It particularly praised the centre for having care plans which reflect the individual needs of the residents and give them "support and assistance to meet their individual needs and wishes".

On the opening of the centre, short break services manager for Newcastle Council, Lynne Young commented, "We feel our new facilities are second to none, and we are very proud of the new-look Cheviot View Centre and really excited about the future."
